Ribbon moment...

Okay, so I had a moment. I needed some white grosgrain ribbon and I went online to order some and well.... look what happened.

There are over 50 spools with 10 - 100 yards each of delicious grosgrain. I am am going to cut 1 yard pieces of each spool today and put them on my Ribbon Rings, by color. I will use an inventory dot to let me know I have more of each of these (it some cases A LOT more) when I run out. Then I can store these spools under the bed until I use up what is on the Ribbon Ring.

SSSSHHHHH don't tell my husband!

Ribbon RIng Scrapbook conventions 2010

4 days on the road and I am back home!

Whew! That was a LLOOOONNNNGGGG drive. I took a different route this time. Going to Texas I let my GPS select the route...she didn't put me on the major highways at all.. must be a setting somewhere. I went through a lot of teensy little towns. They made the trip really interesting. On the way home, my husband wanted to stay on the main highways. NOT fun at all.

So, anyways, I wanted to mention a cute little western store I found in Texas: Kimmy's Rustic to Rhinestones in Cross Plains, Texas.

I got a beautiful necklace there. It has crosses with rhinestones on it and beautiful stones.... hard to explain, but it is sooo cute.

I would have taken the whole store home with me if it would have fit in the car. Everything in it was my style! They had luggage, clothing, home decor.... I am going to call them (they don't have a website) and see if she will ship some of the things I wanted but didn't get....

Anyone know of a store that carries fun western jewelry?

Ribbon Ring driving across the USA

The San Marcos CK convention was a huge success and now I am driving back home. Here are some things I learned about Texas:

1. They drive trucks. Big trucks. I love this about Texas, I fit right in!

2. People are genuinely friendly. Go into any store/restaurant and the clerk will smile and engage in real conversation with you. I am so impressed with their hospitality.

Ribbon Ring is in Texas - YEE HAW!

Having a wonderful time at the Creating Keepsakes convention in San Marcos Texas this weekend! The weather is beautiful and these wonderful Texas ladies LOVE their ribbon! I am so excited to help them get it organized.

I will be driving back home over the next five days, so any orders placed during that time will be shipped when I get back.

I made some really cute pumpkin cupcakes during my evenings in the hotel, so I will take pics and post them on this blog when I return!

I CANNOT get anyone to return my calls or respond to my emails. What gives? I really would like to get a booth at their next scrapbook show in October but repeated attempts to contact them have turned up NADA. ZIPPO. I have tried for over 6 months.

Anyone know someone who knows someone... that I can TALK to about getting a booth there?

Ribbon Ring is back at home in Oregon.

After a long stay in Florida, I am finally back home in Oregon. I had a great time in Orlando! I met a lot of wonderful scrapbookers and I look forward to going back if CHA does the Supershow again.

I was asked by a couple of publishers to write a book about my ribbon crafts. A how-to book if you will..... my ribbon flowers, truffles, cupcakes etc. I have tons more ribbon crafts that I haven't taken to the show too..... strawberries, ice cream cones, etc. I hope the book deal works out! How cool would that be?

Here is a blog from a wonderful lady I met in Orlando.... check it out:

http://msmaxine.blogspot.com/

My next show is in Colorado Springs.... in just a couple of weeks!

Anybody want to see the ribbon ring ice cream cones? Holla at me if you want me to post pics.

THANK YOU SABRINA

A huge thank you to Sabrina P from Las Vegas! She sent me a handful of YUMMY ribbon for no reason at all. What a super nice thing to do. I will pay it forward!

A little help please....

I got a friendly email suggesting I wait to post pics of my most fabulous Ribbon Ring truffles until after CHA so that no one copies me..... not that I sell them or anything, but I see her point of "unveiling" them at the super craft show. So, y'all are gonna have to wait!

On another CHA related topic... how do I nicely say, "PLEASE DON'T TOUCH THE DISPLAYS!"? My topiaries and cupcakes are just getting beat up and it takes a lot of time to "refurbish" them to their original splendor. These truffles, FOR SURE, cannot be touched.

Plus... it is not just touching. (People don't realize that hundreds of people touching the same cupcake makes it dirty). I am amazed at how many people try to take things apart to see how they were made. They pick the sequins off, untie a ribbon, etc. I had secured my cupcakes in their holders, but, a few people pulled on them so hard, a couple of them came apart. (sigh). Two flower topiaries had to be completely remade because people kept pulling the heads off (ACK!) and now the styrofoam looks like swiss cheese and the stem won't stay in.

So, I am going to make some new DO NOT TOUCH signs.... direct, but friendly. My old signs said, "Please don't touch". I don't think the signs were visible enough because we they sure didn't work. I will make the new signs more prominent. Anyone have a cute, yet effective way of communicating the "no touch" policy?
Here are my favorites so far:
  • WARNING! Do not touch! Not only will I kill you, it will hurt the whole time you are dying.
  • Photos okay, touching NO WAY!
  • Please do not touch displays. Yes, that means you.
  • Photographing display $0, Touching display $5

Ribbon Ring ribbon truffles

I found the PERFECT box for my ribbon truffles at a yard sale. Problem is... I need to make a whole bunch more! I had only made 6 for the little candy box I was using, but this new box has 24 candies, so I am on a truffle-making mission!

So, I went to Michaels and Craft Warehouse yesterday to buy truffle ingredients. Oh, will someone please tell me why neither of these stores carry Ribbon Ring? I have sent them numerous packages and I never, ever even hear back from them. . I spend so much money at those two stores, you think they would at least send me a letter saying they GOT the product. But no, they don't. I guess I should yell at my marketing department... Oh, yeah, that's me.

Anyways, I bought everything that could conceivably be part of a truffle recipe.

I will post pics tonite. The truffles are absolutley fabulous and I am not kiddding.

Ribbon Ring getting ready for CHA in Orlando

Hi all! Just packing up my Ribbon Ring show trunks for CHA Orlando later this month. Could Florida be further away?. I just HATE the long flight.

I am sprucing up my ribbon ring cupcakes today. So many people handle them at shows (naughty naughty!) that they get smashed and disheveled... They are looking fresh now. I have idea for a new cupcake, so I am going to make it tonite.

Yesterday I made some butterflies out of ribbon, but I am not in love with them, so I don't think I will bring them to the show... I made some cute ribbon truffles too but I am not sure how to display them at the show. I have a very cute candy box, but I don't have any extra table space... I will prop the candy box up on a little easel, but it is just finding that 6 inches of space for the easel!

My CHA booth number is #1636. Please come and visit me!!!

Ribbon Ring Pasadena Day 2

Another cloudy day in California... what's up with that?

Here is a pic of my booth. Each show I try to improve/add something to the booth. This show, I made sure all of the sample ribbon rings had 30 tags on them so customer could easily see what a ribbon ring starter set looks like. I also have a ribbon ring with 90 tags on it.

I have a corner booth this time and I am right next to skinny cow ice cream. YUMMO. The girls are very nice about passing over treats when I look weary. :)

Here are a couple of observations about Pasadena (not sure if applies to all of California...)

1. Food options are incredible. I am staying in Old Pasadena which is full of amazing restaurants. Thai, Indian, Japanese, Italian... you name it, it is within walking distance! I haven't seen a single "fast food" restaurant - how refreshing is that... although I haven't seen a Starbucks which I desperately need today!

2. Motorcyclists are crazy. They zip through traffic BETWEEN CARS! I have never seen this before, it just doesn't seem very safe!

Will check in later!

Ribbon Ring to go... LITERALLY

Just spotted at CK Pasasdena! A customer had a bag full of ribbons that she just bought here at CK Pasadena and she told me that she didn't want them to get all wrinkled before she got home. In 10 minutes I had all of her ribbons put on Ribbon Ring tags. She then clipped her Ribbon Ring on her jean belt loop and was SOOOO happy. She bought a ton more tags for her ribbon collection at home and says that if she comes back to the show tomorrow, she will bring her ribbons/tags to me to assemble for her! I say, "Bring it!!!"

I am in Pasadena!!!

I am doing the Creating Keepsakes Pasadena show today and tomorrow. This is the first time I have been to Pasadena. It is such a beautiful city!! Last night I treated myself to Pinkberry.... never heard of it before, but it sounded so cute, I just had to go in. It was soooo yummy. Kind of like ice cream, but texture like frozen yogurt... so delicioso.

Okay, back to convention stuff:

Many people have asked me to post directions on how to make the ribbon flowers (topiaries) so I will take some pics and post directions when I get back home next week.

For directions on how to make the ribbon cupcakes, please scroll down... I wrote them up a few months ago on this blog.

If you are in the Pasadena area, please come by and visit me!

Ribbon Ring tour dates

I think I have finalized my convention schedule for this year. Just so hard to be away from my family... plus, how can I go to yard sales if I am out of town all the time???

Having a booth at scrapbook conventions is very hard work, especially if I go alone. Set up is a few hours of lifting, assembling and sweating... then two days of working in my booth, especially difficult if I am alone (can you say NO potty break for 8 hours!!?!?!) with evenings spent alone in the hotel (lonely...), then pack everything back up and fly back home. I am exhausted just thinking about it.

Here is the Ribbon Ring tour schedule for the rest of the year:
  • June 12, 13 - CK Pasadena, CA
  • July 28, 29, 30, 31, August 1 - CHA Orlando, FL (both wholesale & consumer shows)
  • August 22, 23 - Rubber Stamp and Scrapbook Expo, Colorado Springs, CO
  • September 11, 12 - The Great American Scrapbook Expo, Salt Lake City, UT
  • September 18, 19 - CK San Marcos, TX
  • September 26, 27 - Rubber Stamp and Scrapbook Expo, Las Vegas, NV
  • November 6, 7 - CK Seattle, WA

As you can see, I am killing myself in September being gone nearly every weekend, then I took October off (since I am turning 40 that month-figure I could least do that at home!).

If you attending any of these shows, please stop by and see me. :)

Ribbon Ring Strawberry

This took FOREVER to make! I had planned to make a whole plate of them, but forget it. The ribbon is really hard to pin to the weird shape of the styrofoam.

Basic instructions: Get your Ribbon Ring and find a piece of red ribbon that is most like strawberries. I used a medium red grosgrain. I suppose you could use satin but I like texture of the grosgrain. Start with an egg shaped styrofoam form. Shave off a flat side so the strawberry doesn't roll away every time you set it down. Starting in the middle, pin down a red piece of ribbon horizontally. I used a long enough ribbon so that it would overlap itself in the back. Pin securely the entire length of the ribbon. Place the next piece of ribbon right next to the previous piece and pin. I didn't overlap mine because it made it even hard to pin the ribbon down. When the entire strawberry is covered with horizontal ribbon. Take a few strips and run them diagonal to cover any gaps. When all styrofoam is covered, add fancy white pins with red sequins randomly over the front of the strawberry. Cut green ribbon into small 1.5 inch strips. Snip one end into a "v" shape. Pin both sides of the ribbon starting from the center point on top of the strawberry. Then add an additional layer of green with only one side pinned down, to give it some dimension.

bon apetit!

I am going to produce a "How to hang ribbon on Ribbon Ring" instructional video, a "How to make a ribbon topiary" video and then little snippets of Ribbon Ring tips... if you have an idea for a video, please post it here or email me at melissa@ribbonring.com. Really cute hooks for Ribbon Ring

I was at Craft Warehouse today and I saw the CUTEST ever cast iron coat hooks. There was a butterfuly, flower, fleur and some other designs. Seriously cute. I would hang these directly on the wall, but their display showed the hooks mounted onto a wooden plaque, which was painted/embelished. If you are looking for a hook for your Ribbon Ring check them out. There is even a video on their website about how to create the hook plaques. I think the hooks were 20% too.

Ribbon Ring hooks

Buying the hook to hang your Ribbon Ring is a lot of fun. Most people use over-the-door coat racks, curtain rods or regular wall-mounted coat hooks. I have even seen a few plain nails. I am all about finding a cute hook to match the decor of the room. At Joanns craft store yesterday, I saw a bunch of really cute single garden hooks for the wall. These big hooks could accomodate two or three ribbon rings easy. They were 40% off and they had a variety of designs. If you are looking for a cute gardening themed hook, check them out!

RIBBON RING CUPCAKE HOLDERS

A bazillion people have asked where I bought the cupcake holders... I found them at Joanns several months ago. They are resin and I spray painted them to match my pink/black color scheme. For the little truffles, I use real truffle papers, just use a stack of them (DON'T SEPARATE THEM). You could do the same with the big cupcakes.

Ribbon Ring BLACK AND WHITE BUTTON CUPCAKE

BLACK AND WHITE BUTTON RIBBON RING CUPCAKE

Ingredients
One 3"styrofoam ball
buttons,
straight pins ( I use white tipped)
glitter spray

Start at center of ball and add a line of buttons circling the circumference. Plug each button hole with a straight pin to secure to ball. Be aware that there will be gaps between buttons and that is okay. They will fade away when you are all done. If it is too big of a gap, use buttons of similar size so the gaps stay consistant. Place inside cupcake holder to see if you need to add a row at the bottom.

Spray with glitter.

DONE and ENJOY!

Creating Keepsakes Mesa - Ribbon Ring Rules

So here we are wrapping up CK Mesa. My son and I have had a great time here! For fun, my 12 year old son kept a tally of how many people touched* the Ribbon Ring cupcakes and topiaries...despite their being a sign that says, "Please don't touch".

*Touches include petting, poking, full-on touching, GRABBING and yes, breaking the display. One of the flower topiaries got ruined when someone took the head off and them rammed it back on so hard that it made a huge hole all the way through. (Sigh)

Grand total for Friday: 113
Saturday: 85 and counting!!

Ribbon Ring chocolate curl cupcake recipe

Here is the recipe for the Ribbon Ring chocolate curl cupcake:

CHOCOLATE CURL RIBBON RING CUPCAKE

Ingredients
One 3"styrofoam ball
3/8" wide ribbon pieces, approx. 1.5" long
straight pins ( I use both plain and white tipped)
glitter spray

Loop ribbon and secure to ball with two straight pins. One straight pin just isn't enough... the ribbon will shift (trust me on this one). HINT: Start with one style of ribbon and use it all up first, then add another style of ribbon so you can make sure the ribbon designs are evenly spread around the cupcake. Keep adding ribbons until ball is 3/4 covered.

You will need more ribbon than you think.

Place inside cupcake holder to see if you need more/less ribbon. Spray with glitter.
DONE and ENJOY!

Ribbon Ring CRAZY RIBBON cupcake recipe

I am going to post my Ribbon Ring cupcake recipes one at a time, at the end I will post HOW to get the cupcakes to stay in the cupcake holder. It is SOOOOOO tricky but I found the PERFECT solution.

Here we go!

CRAZY RIBBON RING CUPCAKE

Ingredients
One 3"styrofoam ball
3/8" wide ribbon pieces, approx. 1.5" long
straight pins ( I use both plain and white tipped)
glitter spray

Tie ribbon with a knot in the middle and pin through the knot. HINT: Start with one style of ribbon and use it all up first, then add another style of ribbon so you can make sure the ribbon designs are evenly spread around the cupcake. Keep adding ribbons until ball is 3/4 covered.

Place inside cupcake holder to see if you need more/less ribbon. Spray with glitter.
DONE and ENJOY!

Ribbon Ring strawberries

One of the most frequently asked questions I get at conventions is,"What do you do with ALL THAT RIBBON??" Firstly, all that ribbon in my booth isn't ALL my ribbon... (tee hee). My most favorite ribbons are at home, safely hanging on the wall, on Ribbon Rings, away from ICE CREAM FINGERS!!!

To answer the question: mostly I use it on scrapbook pages. Of course, I use it on other craft projects too, like cards, chipboard albums etc. My daughter occasionally let me put ribbon in her hair and I love doing that. I make beautiful ribbon bows for presents and cupcake boxes too.

I also really enjoy making little non-traditional things out of ribbon. You know, things that you wouldn't normally make out of ribbon, like cupcakes. As my previous posts have mentioned, I have made the CUTEST pink and white ribbon cupcakes that you will ever see.

So, what is next? Now I am on to strawberries! I got the idea this afternoon and I am determined to make the cutest basket full of ribbon strawberries. I will post a picture when I am done.

Ribbon Ring - My favorite place to buy ribbon...

I get asked ALL THE TIME where I buy my ribbon. Well, I have been collecting it for over 12 years, so I know all the good places to find it! One of my very favorite supplies for quality grosgrain and ric rac is Really Reasonable Ribbon. I just bought 700 yards from them in fact. :) Yes 700 yards. DO NOT tell my husband. :)

I am replacing all of my personal ribbon that I take to scrapbook shows. So many people touch and handle the ribbon at my booth and I want to encourage that... just not with my own personal ribbon. Especially when a child with ice-cream fingers wants to touch all of the pink ribbon.... ACK! I know you get it... So, if you are looking for yummy ribbon, visit the Really Reasonable Ribbon website... http://www.reasonableribbon.com/.

Tell them the Ribbon Ring lady sent you! :)

Ribbon Ring is going to CK Arizona

Mark your calendars, we are going to the desert! I am sooo looking forward to a little bit of sunshine... Living in the Northwest, we rarely get to see the sun during winter/spring. I will have a booth at the Creating Keepsakes Convention in Mesa, Arizona on May 17th & 18th. I am bringing my 12 year old son to help me out so it should be alot of fun. Please stop by our booth #96!

Ribbon Ring booth in Salt Lake City - Great American Scrapbook Expo

Here is my Ribbon Ring booth in Salt Lake City a few weeks ago. I had tons of people try to buy my cupcake holder, ribbon topiaries and ribbon rings (full of ribbon).

Sorry the pic is so dark. In person, it is very bright, pink and glittery!!!!

The clear paint cans are each full of book rings in different sizes. At our next show in Mesa, Arizona I am adding three additional book ring sizes.

Ribbon Ring sequin truffle & cupcakes

Here is a close-up of my ribbon cupcake.

So easy to make. The picture doesn't do it justice. In-person, you just want to hug it.

And the sequin truffle. This thing is terribly cute. Seriously.

Ribbon Ring cupcakes

Everyone who visited me at my Ribbon Ring booth in Salt Lake City ooooh and ahhhhed over these yummy cupcakes. They have nothing to do with scrapbooking or ribbon storage but they are soooo fun to look at! They are made with common craft ingredients: ribbon (my personal favorite), sequins, puff balls, buttons, pipe cleaners and a WHOLE lot of stick pins. I used plastic cupcake holders which I spray painted to match my color scheme, but I have used real paper cupcake holders in the past. Just use a whole bunch for each cupcake so they are sturdy.

My favorite is the pink and black ribbon cupcake on the middle rack. The ribbons are curled in circles and look like fun chocolate shavings. Of coarse, I sprayed them with glitter and yes they do look delicious! This cupcake rack brought so many people over to my booth. I could have sold this display a dozen times at least. It would be very cute at a baby shower!!! Once people realized I wasn't selling cupcakes, they were thrilled to see Ribbon Ring! I love talking ribbon storage!

If you have any questions about how there were made, just email me. I am happy to give you my recipe.

Ribbon Ring in Salt Lake City

We were so pleased to be a part of The Original Scrapbook USA Expo in Salt Lake City this weekend. There was music, games, cropping, shopping and loads of fun! It was the perfect place to bring Ribbon Ring. It was such a pleasure to meet so many wonderful ladies. Ribbon Ring was very well received and many said it was the best ribbon storage idea they had ever seen. :)

Also, I think my ribbon cupcakes and ribbon flower pots were a big hit. I could have sold them a dozen times! They aren't for sale, but I am happy to give directions on how to make them to anyone that asks... I will post pictures of the Ribbon Ring cupcakes and flowers tomorrow.
